Hypertension is classified into stages based on systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels. Normal is <120/80 mmHg, while elevated is 120–129 systolic and <80 diastolic. Stage 1 hypertension ranges from 130–139/80–89 mmHg, and Stage 2 is 140+/90+ mmHg. A hypertensive crisis is a medical emergency with BP ≥180/120 mmHg, requiring immediate treatment.

This exam is designed to assess students’ understanding of bradycardia, its causes, symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment options. It will test both theoretical knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge in clinical settings.

Atrial tachycardia is a type of arrhythmia where the heart's upper chambers (atria) beat abnormally fast, usually over 100 beats per minute. It can lead to symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, or shortness of breath. The condition is typically diagnosed through an electrocardiogram (ECG), which shows abnormal electrical activity in the heart. Treatment options include antiarrhythmic drugs, beta blockers, or cardioversion in severe cases.

Propylthiouracil (PTU) and methimazole are antithyroid medications used to treat hyperthyroidism. Common adverse effects include rash, agranulocytosis (severe decrease in white blood cells), and liver toxicity (especially with PTU). Both drugs may lead to hypothyroidism if overused or improperly dosed. Methimazole is also associated with teratogenic effects (birth defects) if used during pregnancy, while PTU is preferred in the first trimester for this reason.

Maternal and child nursing involves caring for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, as well as providing care for infants and children. Prenatal care includes regular check-ups to monitor the health of both mother and baby during pregnancy. Nurses assist during labor and delivery, providing support and monitoring both the mother’s and baby’s health. Postpartum care focuses on the recovery of the mother and the initial health assessments and care of the newborn.

Psychiatric nursing focuses on caring for individuals with mental health conditions like depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety. It involves therapeutic communication to build trust and help patients express their feelings and concerns. Nurses assess patient conditions, administer medications, and monitor responses to treatment. They also educate patients and families about managing psychiatric disorders and improving overall mental well-being.

Cardiovascular pharmacology involves medications that treat heart and blood vessel conditions. Antihypertensives help control high blood pressure, while beta blockers reduce heart rate and strain on the heart. ACE inhibitors prevent blood vessel constriction, and calcium channel blockers relax blood vessels and reduce heart workload. Diuretics remove excess salt and fluid, helping manage conditions like heart failure and hypertension.

Neonatal care involves practices to ensure the well-being and health of newborns. Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients and immunity to the baby. Apgar score is used to assess the newborn’s condition at birth, guiding immediate care. Newborn screening checks for metabolic or genetic disorders, and umbilical cord care ensures proper hygiene to avoid infection.

Pediatric pharmacology focuses on the study of drugs and their effects in children. It involves age-specific dosing to account for differences in metabolism and development. Medications are carefully chosen for pediatric safety to minimize adverse effects and ensure effectiveness. Pharmacokinetics (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination) in children varies, making dosing adjustments necessary

Newborn care involves practices that ensure the health and well-being of a baby in the early stages of life. Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients and antibodies, supporting the baby's immune system. Newborn screening checks for certain conditions that may not be visible at birth, ensuring early treatment if needed. Vaccinations are given according to schedules to protect babies from serious diseases like polio and hepatitis.

Drug therapy for pediatrics involves careful selection of medications and dosing based on age, weight, and developmental stage. Pediatric pharmacology ensures drugs are safe and effective for children, with attention to side effects and drug interactions. Dosing guidelines are typically weight-based or age-specific to avoid under or overdosing. Medication administration is tailored for children, considering factors like taste, ease of swallowing, and proper dosage forms.

Pharmacodynamics refers to how a drug affects the body, including its mechanism of action and therapeutic effects. Pharmacokinetics describes how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and eliminates a drug. Drug absorption determines how quickly a drug enters the bloodstream, while drug metabolism focuses on how the liver breaks down drugs. Drug elimination is the process of removing the drug from the body, often through urine or feces.

Pediatric dosing is based on factors like a child’s weight, age, and body surface area (BSA) to ensure safety and effectiveness. Weight-based dosing is commonly used for accurate calculation of medication amounts in children. Age-related dosing accounts for developmental differences in metabolism and drug absorption. Understanding pediatric pharmacokinetics helps in adjusting doses to minimize risks and ensure proper treatment.

Common pediatric diseases include asthma, a chronic lung condition, and bronchiolitis, a viral respiratory infection. Croup causes inflammation in the airway, leading to a distinctive barking cough. Chickenpox is a contagious viral infection marked by itchy skin rashes. Respiratory infections, like the common cold or pneumonia, are also frequent in young children.

Therapeutic communication is a professional, empathetic conversation aimed at helping patients express feelings. It includes active listening, open-ended questions, and showing empathy to foster trust. Defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological strategies used to cope with stress or anxiety. Common mechanisms include denial, projection, and rationalization, which may affect behavior and interactions

Addiction is a chronic condition where individuals compulsively use substances despite harmful effects. It includes drug abuse, alcoholism, and dependency on behaviors like gambling. Eating disorders involve unhealthy eating habits and body image issues. Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, often needing psychological support.

Mental health problems affect a person’s thinking, mood, and behavior. Common conditions include depression, anxiety, and more severe disorders like schizophrenia. They may be caused by genetics, trauma, stress, or substance use. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for recovery and quality of life.

Nursing is a healthcare profession focused on caring for individuals, families, and communities. It involves promoting health, preventing illness, and supporting patient recovery. Good communication and ethical practice are key components of effective nursing. Nurses work in diverse settings, applying clinical skills and compassion in patient care.

Antihypertensive drugs are medications used to lower high blood pressure. They include classes like ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, and diuretics. Each class works through different mechanisms such as vasodilation or fluid reduction. They help prevent complications like stroke, heart failure, and kidney damage.

The ATI Fundamentals of Nursing document (or study guide) is a comprehensive resource designed to help nursing students master the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for safe and effective nursing care. It is aligned with nursing curricula and often used as a prep tool for the ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute) exam, which evaluates students’ understanding of basic nursing concepts.
