In Unit 2 we examine a major issue that underlies much of our current political controversies: the profit motive. We examine the profit motive in a market economy and see that it guides, through self-interest, efficiency in the use of society's scarce resources. However, like all human activity, markets are not perfect and need government control to function for the benefit of society.
