Definition
IIM are a heterogeneous group of systemic autoimmune disorders characterized
by chronic inflammation of skeletal muscles (myositis), leading to progressive
muscle weakness.
• Autoimmune origin, often idiopathic (exact cause unknown).
• Primarily affects proximal muscles of shoulder and hip girdle.
• Can involve other organs such as skin, lungs, and joints.
