Discuss the Use of Laypeople in Criminal Cases
Laypeople play a crucial role in the criminal justice system in England and Wales. A
layperson is a member of the public who does not have formal legal training or professional
knowledge of the law. Laypeople participate in criminal cases primarily in two ways: by
acting as magistrates or by serving as jurors. Their involvement reflects the principle that
justice should be administered with public participation and oversight, rather than being
controlled entirely by legal professionals.
