Content: Reading - Reading Comprehension

Goal: Students will be able to read and comprehend grade-level texts to demonstrate

understanding of key ideas, vocabulary, and text structures.

Explanation: The goal supports student thinking and engagement by targeting

generalized reading comprehension skills across different genres, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

Mastering these skills helps students become strong and independent readers. It supports

thinking by requiring students to analyze literary elements, word choice, theme, inferences, and

the main idea. It promotes engagement by exposing students to diverse materials that challenge

them to make connections.

A1. Instructional Strategies

Guided Reading Groups: Students will be grouped into small reading groups based on

reading levels. The teacher will provide a passage and prompt comprehension during group

meetings with questions, modeling, and text-based evidence. This strategy will support

students' individuality by allowing them to gain what they need and engage with texts at an

appropriately challenging level.

Close Reading with Text Annotation: Students will read short grade-level passages

repetitively and mark their passage as they read. For example, when reading a fiction passage,

students use CLAPS (characters, lesson, author's purpose, problem/solution, and setting).

During a nonfiction passage, students will use FAM (text features, author's purpose, and main

idea and details of each paragraph). The teacher will model and guide students to reading while

focusing on a general understanding, vocabulary/structure, and deeper meaning. This strategy

will build students' reading stamina and critical thinking while improving their comprehension by
