Assignment title (Physiology): Training for Work

In this assessment you will have opportunities to provide evidence against the following criteria.
Indicate the page numbers where the evidence can be found.

Criteria To achieve the criteria the evidence must show Task no. Evidence
reference that the learner is able to:

Record accurately observations of different types of
P3
tissues from a light microscope.
1 x

Interpret electron micrographs of different types of
P4
tissues.
2 x

Describe the key structures and functions of a eukaryotic
P5
and prokaryotic cell.
3 x

Explain how the relative presence of different cell
M2
components influences the function of tissues.
4 x

Compare different tissues with similar functions in terms
D2
of their structure and functions.
5 x

Assignment title (Physiology): Training for Work

Purpose of this assignment:
To assess learners’ knowledge and understanding of AC. P3, P4, P5, M2, D2.

Scenario
You work as a scientist in a cytology department in the NHS. As part of a training programme,
you have been requested to provide a portfolio of evidence dealing with accurate knowledge and
understanding of cell microscopy. An ability to properly relate structure and function with regard to
cell differentiation in the formation of various tissue types is vital.

Task 1

You are provided with Light microscope slides of tissue types: epithelial, connective, nerve and
muscular. Identify (name), draw and label them accordingly.

(Make an accurate pencil drawing to represent what you can see, taking a full A4 sheet of plain paper
for each drawing. Add title i.e. precise name of tissue type, 3 labels at least and magnification to
each drawing.)

This provides evidence for [P3]

Task 2

You are provided with a range of Electron micrographs of tissues. (See the copy of micrographs
attached).
Label the cell organelles listed: cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, nucleolus, cytoplasm,
mitochondrion, ribosome, endoplasmic reticulum (smooth and rough), Golgi body, vesicles, and
lysosome.

This provides evidence for [P4]

Task 3

Describe the key structures and functions of a eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell.

This provides evidence for [P5]

Task 4

(i) Briefly explain cell differentiation and its importance in the formation of tissue types.
(ii) Using the Electron micrographs of tissues provided in Task P4, explain how the presence of
certain numbers of cell components influence the functions of tissues i.e: effect of large
number of mitochondria in a specific tissue type.

[500-600 words]
This provides evidence for [M2]

Task 5

2

, Your task here is to write an article titled “Comparative Cytology”: whereby you should compare
the cardiac and skeletal muscles in terms of their structure and functions; clearly describing the
differences between the tissues and explaining how both tissue types perform similar functions.

This provides evidence for [D2]

Evidence checklist

[Summarise evidence required, e.g. ‘leaflet’, ‘presentation notes’ etc.] [tick boxes]

Task 1: Name, draw and label tissue Light microscope slides provided. x
Complete identification of the tissues as requested in the images provided.

Task 2: x
Name, draw and label a range of Electron micrographs of tissues provided.

Task 3: A written report providing a short description of the structures and functions of
prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell components. Clearly labelled and annotated diagrams included.
x
Task 4: A well-detailed explanatory essay. x
Task 5: A written article. x
