, • Provide emotional support for grieving and coping
during a crisis and on an ongoing basis. Refer to social
services if appropriate. Emotional or physical stress
can trigger a crisis episode.
• Adequate daily fluid intake to prevent
dehydration (dehydration increases blood viscosity
which can trigger a crisis episode) is important.
• Avoid infection by practicing good hand
hygiene and avoiding individuals who are ill.
Receive early treatment by a health care
provider for infections as fever can trigger a
crisis. Over-the-counter medications may not
be sufficient to treat infection and prevent a
sickle cell crisis.
• Moderate activity, adequate rest, and activity
restriction are needed to avoid fatigue and hypoxia as
this can trigger a crisis. Any condition that increases the
body’s need for oxygen or alters oxygen transport can
trigger a crisis.
• Observe for manifestations of impending crisis and
infection and notify the health care provider
immediately.
• Promote rest and adequate nutrition.
• Maintain up to date on immunizations to
prevent infection.
• Consider genetic testing and counseling to
allow for childbearing planning.
• Wear a medical-identification wristband or tag.
