Technology Concepts
Since the pandemic, education has made a major shift toward technology integration.
This has had a huge impact on curriculum development over the last four years. In 2020, many
teachers had to, very quickly and unexpectedly, adapt to teaching completely online.
Technology has changed so much over the course of my lifetime but even quite a bit in my four
years of teaching. Technology has the ability to make life easier. With the internet we have the
world at our fingertips. With that being said, the internet has both wonderful and terrible
powers. With this new access to the outside world, students are more easily distracted and off
task at times.
As educators, we have several jobs when it comes to technology. We must not rely on
technology to do the teaching. We have to keep our students engaged so they want to learn. We
cannot allow the monotony of sitting in front of a computer screen to take over our classroom.
We also must teach students how to use these resources responsibly, respectfully and how to use
appropriate discretion. The two technology concepts that will most closely apply to my
curriculum change plan are digital citizenship and e-learning fatigue. We do not have a
computer or keyboarding teacher at my school, so, as the STEAM teacher I’ve incorporated
some of those skills into my STEAM curriculum. During our coding unit, we spend some time
talking about digital citizenship and student responsibilities when using their chrome books. E-
learning is another important concept to discuss because, with constant access to chrome books,
it is important that teachers aren’t overusing them for instruction.
