-The teacher maintains high expectations for all learners in how she questions the
students once they measure. The students say, “9 4” and she asks, “What is 9 4” and the
students answer with “94”. She does it again when the other student measures after they
adjust. He says, “It is 1 0 5,” and the teacher again asks, “What is 1 0 5? “The student
says, “105”. This ensures that the students connect the measurement into standard form
and have a high expectation for them to tell numbers.
-The teacher is engaging all students in learning by giving each student a voice
after she asks questions. She gives the students time to answer, and then she asks
another student specifically to allow them to answer. She values all students’ voices,
which is engaging for all students. She also asks them what they want to change to make
the car go further and allows them all to answer. She also does this by asking questions
like, “Why do you think this?” and “Discuss in your group.”
- The teacher encourages all students to engage in self-testing. She does this by
first asking the students their opinions on which turn went the furthest and why. After
this, she was able to question the students if they wanted to add or take something away
from the vehicle. She listens to Hailey first, then asks the other students in the group to
repeat Hailey’s idea. She then turns and asks Jacob if he wants to add or take anything
away from his car. She is asking multiple students for their input and how they can be
encouraged to do self-testing and making changes to see what goes the furthest.

-The teacher had a positive tone for learning. She was engaging all students in
their learning with their thinking. When a student was not engaging in the lesson, she
was able to ask them for their thoughts in a positive tone.
-The teacher treats everyone as valued and respected members of the community.
When a student says something, she often repeats it. When she liked the answer to a
question, she repeated that answer and asked all the other students if they heard that
answer. She also asks if there is anything else they want to do to the car before they run
it down the ramp again. This ensures that all students feel valued and respected. She lets
them change whatever they want and reassures them that “it’s your car!” and that they
