Chapter 4 Terminology
1. aerotolerant anaerobes- bacteria that do not require oxygen; its
presence neither hinders nor helps the growth of the organisms.
2. Autotrophs- tissue transplanted from one site in an individual to
another site in the same individual
3. Bacilli- rod-shaped bacteria, some of which are endospore forming
4. Barophiles- microorganisms that grow best under high hydrostatic
pressures and live only in the deepest parts of oceans
5. Barotolerant- microorganisms that can survive under conditions of
increased hydrostatic pressure
6. binomial system- the system of nomenclature in which organisms are
identified by a two-part Latinized name. It was devised by Linnaeus
and therefore is also referred to as the Linnaean system
7. Capneic- describing bacteria (capnophiles) that require more carbon
dioxide than is present in the normal atmosphere

viable cells
15. Diplococci- round bacteria (cocci) that remain paired after cell
division
