Week 5 Discussion Applied Assessment Case This week’s discussion I was to take on the role of a graduate student working in a mental health clinic. The given patient assigned is Ms. Thompson, we are provided with the neuropsychological report, in order to assist her with psychologist recommendations on her concentration and attention. MS. Thompson was referred because, Dr. Xu had some concerns with cognitive difficulties you may be facing that are related with history of concussions. When testing Ms. Thompson in her visuospatial and perceptual functions, there were no evidence of any deficiency in hemispatial neglect, or object agnosia. Although she took a different approach her performance was still within normal limits. Ms. Thompsons test on language and related functions such as auditory comprehension, repetition, naming, writing, and calculations. Ms. Thompson’s speech is confident and verbalized, there were no visible errors in her speech process. Confrontation naming was complete and auditory comprehension was well-maintained. However in her learning and memory which is based on retention, or retrieval of new information being stored was not so thrilling, there were some visible issues. In Ms. Thompsons learning and memory her ability to put into code new information was prominent for a lower than average learning but generally average for her group range. The patient was intact with her encoding and recognition, she had more difficulty learning lengthy things like story information. Delayed recall of difficult is slightly weakened along with her pattern on memory testing. I will approach goal setting for Ms. Thompson referring to her memory and retention of memory. I would suggest when you feel over whelmed with work, try to take frequent breaks to clear your mind, sometimes a reset is perfect and can lead to better options. Work in a distraction free place that way you are able to get the best out of the learning process, work on one thing at a time, and use written reminders. If I had to run extra test, I would choose to run would be: General Cognitive Assessment would be, "The Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE; Folstein et al., 1975) has a very long history as a clinical and research tool used to screen for cognitive impairment. Factor-analytic research suggests that this test primarily measures concentration, language, orientation, memory, and attention". (Cohen, R. J., Swerdlik, M. E., & Sturman, E. D. (2013).. Attention test would be tested by doing a picture arrangement assessment, "In the genre of a comic-strip panel, this subtest requires the testtaker to re-sort a scrambled set of cards with pictures on them into a story that makes sense. Because the testtaker must understand the whole story before a successful re-sorting will occur, this subtest is thought to tap the ability to comprehend or “size up” a situation. Additionally, attention, concentration, and ability to see temporal and cause-and-effect relationships are tapped."( Cohen, R. J., Swerdlik, M. E., & Sturman, E. D. (2013).. Language Testing, "the achievement and cognitive abilities tests is a battery of tests designed to measure oral language ability. Included in the latter battery are tests targeting, for example, listening comprehension and speed of lexical access." (Cohen, R. J., Swerdlik, M. E., & Sturman, E. D. (2013). Visuospatial Test would be tested by the cancellation, which is "The task is to scan either a structured or an unstructured arrangement of visual stimuli and mark targeted images within a specified time limit. This subtest taps visual selective attention and related abilities." (Cohen, R. J., Swerdlik, M. E., & Sturman, E. D. (2013). Learning / memory test would be measured by, "A widely used test of memory (and more) is the California Verbal Learning Test–II. The test yields recall and recognition scores as well as information related to learning rate, error types, and encoding strategies."(Cohen, R. J., Swerdlik, M. E., & Sturman, E. D. (2013).
