How does emergent writing develop? Answer - mergent writing begins with
the first marks on paper. These scribbles are writing. This continues until they
invent spellings based upon sound and letter correspondence (page 82).
Emergent writing develops better in a print-rich classroom. This is because they
see so many different forms of writing and are exposed to different words
everywhere they look (pages 172 and 173).


What is mock-linear writing? Why is it important? Answer - writing
characterized by a linear arrangement of laetrile shapes and squiggles
when children "mock" or imitate the writing forms that the adults in their life
use and they see. It is important because it helps them establish the idea that
we write from left to right (page 82). It is important to acknowledge the mock
linear writing of students by displaying the student's work around the
classroom. This validates what they are doing and encourages them to
continue (page 173).
