- Cognitive- The study of mental processes such as language use, memory, attention, problem
solving, etc.

- Developmental- Study of how we learn, grow, and adapt throughout our lives.

- Experimental- Actually experimenting on humans or animals for research.

- Industrial/organizational- Study of working and how we behave in organizations.

- Social- Study of how our thoughts and behaviors are influenced by others or the thought of others.

Freud's concept of the unconscious - ANS✅✅- Concept of the unconscious: A respiratory of
memories, emotions, and thoughts, many of them illogical, that affect our behavior even though we
cannot talk about them.

- According to this theory, people deal with traumatic experiences and unresolved childhood
conflicts by forcing certain thoughts and emotions into the unconscious mind.



Freud's structure of personality - ANS✅✅- Consists of 3 aspects:

1) id- sexual and other biological drives that demand immediate gratification. (hunger, thirst, etc.)

2) ego- the rational, decision-making aspect of the personality.

3) superego- contains the memory of rules and prohibitions we learned from our parents and others.

- Overly dominant id would lead to violent, threatening, impulsive, behaviors.

, - Over active superego leads to overanalyzing. Over control of emotions. Emotional depression.



Abraham Maslow - ANS✅✅- Humanistic.

- Maslow insisted that personality can also be better than normal.

- Self-actualization (the achievement of one's full potential.)

- People with self-actualizing personality show the following characteristics:

a) accurate perception of reality (perceive the world as it is, not as they would like it to be. Accept
uncertainty and ambiguity.)

b) independence, creativity, and spontaneity (they make their own decisions, even if others
disagree.)

c) acceptance of themselves and others (they treat people with unconditional positive regard)

d) a problem-centered outlook rather than a self-centered outlook (they think about how to solve
problems, not how to make themselves look good.)

e) enjoyment of life (they are open to positive experiences, including "peak experiences" when they
feel truly fulfilled and content.)

f) a good sense of humor.

- Triangular diagram of scaling to the top: (need first to get second, need second to get third, etc.)

1) Physiological (hunger, thirst, avoidance of pain, sexual gratification, elimination)

2) Safety (safe and secure housing, protection from crime and harsh weather)

3) Love and Belongingness (emotional intimacy, friendships, social connections.)

4) Esteem (achievement, respect, prestige, status, approval.)

5) Self-Actualization (fulfillment of individual potential)

specify how to interpret the results.



Projective Techniques - ANS✅✅- Designed to encourage people to project their personality
characteristics onto ambiguous stimuli.

- Two Techniques:

a) Rorschach Inkblots (Based on people's interpretations of 10 ambiguous inkblots. It's the most
famous and most used.)

b) Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) (The person is asked to make up a story for each picture,
describing what events led up to this scene, what is happening now, and what will happen in the
future.)
