M&R Assignment Miracles:
Lieke: Mark 9:14-29

There is a large crowd standing around the disciples, but everyone ran to
Jesus as soon as they saw him. A man from the crowd tells him that his son
cannot speak, and has seizures where he foams at the mouth, gnashes his
teeth and becomes rigid. He says ‘unbelieving generation’ to the disciples.
When the son was brought to Jesus, he had a convulsion and fell to the
ground. The boy has been like that since childhood, and the father says
that it has thrown him into fire and water. Jesus says that everything is
possible for a believer. He rebuked the impure spirit, at which it came out
of the boy and the boy fell as if it was dead. But Jesus raised him and he
was alive again. He told the disciples the boy could only be healed by
prayer.

Elin: Luke 9:37-43

The next day, when they came back, there was a man calling out in the
crowd ‘Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. A spirt
seizes him and he screams. It throws him into convulsions. It scarcely ever
leaves him and is destroying him. I begged your disciples to drive it out,
but they did not.’ ‘You unbelieving and perverse generation’ Jesus replied,
‘how long should I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son
here.’ Even while the boy was coming, he was thrown on the ground by
the demon. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave
him back to his father. They were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Isabelle: Matthew 17:14-21

Jesus arrives at a crowd when a man approaches him. He asks for mercy
for his son, he has seizures and is suffering greatly, often throwing himself
into fire or water. Your disciples could not heal him. Jesus calls his
generation unbelieving and perverse and says: how long shall I put up with
you? How long shall I stay with you? Jesus rebukes the demon and the boy
was healed. Later, the disciples ask him why they could not drive the
demon out, Jesus replies that they did not have enough faith. And
something about a mustard seed and mountains.

, Differences:

 The moment that Jesus comes to the crowd is different in every
story. In Mark, Jesus was looking for the other disciples and he found
them surrounded by a huge crowd. In Luke, they ‘came from a
mountain’, and in Matthew, it is unclear where they came from, but
in the text it said that ‘they came to the crowd’.

 It is only in Mark that the people run to meet Jesus, otherwise Jesus
just comes to the crowd and the father turns directly to him.

 Another point is that in all the stories, the father greets Jesus
differently. In Luke and Mark, the man just calls out of the crowd, and
in Matthew, the father runs to him and kneels before him.

 The story of Mark is the longest, and the most detailed. It says how
the boy was thrown into a convulsion, and how that looked. Jesus
tells the father how everything is possible for one who believes. It is
also described more detailed how the spirit acts.

 Only in Luke, Jesus does not tell the disciples that they did not have
enough faith, which is contrary to the other stories, because there
he tells them in private.

Similarities:

 Jesus arriving at a place, where a crowd has formed.

 A man walks up to Jesus and begs him to heal his son, who keeps
having seizures and tries to throw himself into fire and water.

 Jesus called this generation (the generation he is in at the moment,
not in the 2020’s) unbelieving.

 Everybody was amazed by the greatness of God.
