Orlistat (Xenical)
- Is prescribed to morbidly obese pts to lose weight. It prevents
absorption of some of the fat in the pts diet.
- The med should be taken 3 times/day within 1 hour of a meal
- Its a lipase inhibitor, not an appetite suppressor.
Donepezil (Aricept)

side effects:
A-fib, D/N/V/H, frequent voiding
contraindications:
hypersensitivity, cardiac dx, ulcer dx, seizures, teratogenic,
dizziness

intended use:
osteoarthritis
side effects:
N/HB/D/C/H/drowsiness
contraindications:
shellfish allergy
diabetic
possibly teratogenic

assess BM
serum glucose levels
herbal supplements can interfere
ferrous sulfate (Feosol)

iron supplement
intended use:
treatment of iron deficiency anemia
,contraindications:
hypersensitivity
anemia NOT due to iron deficiency
nursing implications:
seizures, hypotension, C/D, epigastric pain, skin staining,
anaphylaxis
assess nutritional status, bowel function
- monitor hemoglobin, hematocrit, iron levels
- may cause elevated liver enzymes
- take on an empty stomach to increase absorption/vitamin c
helps with absorption
- use z-track for IM injections
Alendronate (Fosamax)
- This medication is used to prevent and treat postmenopausal
osteoporosis and Paget's Disease.
- Alendronate must be taken first thing in the morning on an
empty stomach.
- The pt must be instructed to wait at least 30 minutes after
taking Alendronate before eating, drinking, or taking other
medications.
calcium supplements and vitamin D therapy
maintaining high blood levels of calcium in association with
vitamin D helps maintain bone density; used to treat
osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and rickets
, Levodopa/Carbidopa (Sinemet)
Parkinson's (dopaminergic)
Can cause N/V, dyskinesias, orthostatic hypotension, CV
stimulation, psychosis, discolored sweat/urine
Do not use w/ MAOIs
Proteins interfere w/ absorption
Furosemide (Lasix)
Classification:
loop diuretic
inhibit absorption of sodium and choride in the loop of hence
and proimal and distal tubules, thus causing fluid loss, along
with sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium losses
loop diuretics are very potent diuretics and are used when a
patient has an exacerbation of fluid overload
intended use:
used to treat patients with edema and is also used to treat
hypertension
IV furosemide is used to urgently treat pulmonary edema
side effects:
hypovolemia (decrease in Ca, Mg, Cl, K, Ch, Na), dehydration,
increased BUN/voiding, ototoxic
contraindications:
kidney and liver disease
