The resource based view has been used to assess the strategic capabilities of Mattel through an analysis of Mattel’s resources & competencies (Appendix 6). Mattel’s success to date can be attributed to the development of world leading brands such as Barbie and their ability to reconfigure products to meet the needs of different geographical markets. A Porter’s value chain analysis (Appendix 9) reveals that these brands are supported by the organisation’s sub business units such as HiT entertainment which produces original media content based on Mattel characters and the sales & marketing function which licenses those characters to 3rd parties as a source of income while also increasing brand exposure.
