Process A has a standard deviation of 0.9 while process B has a standard deviation of 1.2.

The mean for the two processes is 12. Process B shows greater variation with a standard

deviation of 1.2. A greater standard deviation shows that values are spread away from the

mean. Data is less consistent and less predictable. Data with a greater standard deviation is

less reliable as the variance is high. To improve on it, Process B has to increase the sample

size so that the standard deviation is reduced. Data A is more consistent and predictable

because of the small standard deviation. The values are closer to the mean which is 12.

Such information is useful in decision-making as it can be used in decision-making

whereby the process with a smaller standard deviation is chosen as it is consistent.

Although process A might record higher productivity, the big standard deviation might

indicate to the decision-makers that the result is not consistent and varies from time to time.



2. Hang Up and Drive
