Description of Skill
This type of administration bypasses the mouth and digestive tract via subcutaneous,
intraperitoneal, intramuscular, intravenous, and dermal injection.
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
Pre: Client education and five medication
rights, medical hx & allergies, vital signs
Intra: Follow administration guidlines for
medication administration, ie. fast/slow push,
needle gauge, z-track technique, etc., and
monitor client for adverse effects
Post: Continue to monitor for adverse effects
and document administration

Sucess in delivering the medication/nutrition
and improve client’s health -Explanation of Pharmokinetics being used
-Educate client on potential side effects/
adverse reactions & to self-monitor
-Explain how to self-administer, monitor, and
store medication if taking at home
-Importance of seeking medical attention if
experiencing adverse effects
Potential Complications Nursing Interventions
-Pain -Thorough client assessment
-Bleeding -Patient education
-Infection -Following the 5 medication rights
-Nerve damage -Prepare medication
-Hypo/hyperglycemia (specifically for TPN) -Using safe administration techniques:
Appropriate needle size, discarding sharps in
sharps bin, not injecting IM on deltoid if >2mL
-Monitor client
-Accurately document
