Unit 22 : Rules, Regulations and
Officiating in Sport
By Saiful
, Court Pitch/ Layout
Football pitches and sizes all vary depending on age differences. Once athletes reach 13+ they start to play on 11 a side
pitches sometimes with smaller goals. However, under-13s and under-14s are expected to play on pitches that are 55 yards
wide and 90 yards long on maybe 2G & 3G pitches. The field of play must be completely natural or, if competition rules permit,
a fully artificial playing surface and it should be green. The field of play must be rectangular and marked with safe continuous
lines; artificial surface material may, if it is not unsafe be used for field marking on natural fields. These lines also belong to
the areas of which they are boundaries, Touchlines are the two longer boundary lines and goal-lines are the two shorter lines.
A halfway line, which joins the midpoint of the two touchlines, splits the field of play into two parts and All lines must be of the
same width, which must not be more than 12cm. At the midpoint of the halfway line is the centre mark. A circle is labelled
around it with a radius of 9.15m (10yds). There are also lines for the goal area, penalty area and corner area which are certain
lengths and sizes. The dimensions for normal 11 a side pitch includes:
Length (touchline):
minimum 90m (100yds)
maximum 120m (130 yds)
Length (goal-line):
minimum 45m (50yds)
maximum 90m (100yds)
However this may change depending on factors such as age groups,
type of football for example (futsal) and more.
