b) Introduction:
In the current year 2020 the world got hit by a pandemic called corona virus or
covid-19. Our communities and children of South Africa are affected by this and
as a result we now have to wear masks and sanitize where ever we go to help
control the spread of the virus. We now even have to wear masks at school as
well.
c) Step 01: Investigation
Our target for this project is the school children how to make masks.
d) Schools have been closed for a few months since the country was hit by the
pandemic. The country slowly reopened schools from lockdown level 3 in order
not to lose the 2020 academic year. However both teachers and learners now
have to wear masks on a daily basis to avoid the spread of the corona virus.
The obtain teacher will need to help learners obtain the skill of learning how to
make a mask in order to safe costs on having to buy one every time and learners
can also use this skill to masks for the people in their community that cannot
afford to buy one.
e) Step 02: Design alternative solutions
f) Solution 01: Make masks from recycled plastic bottles, disadvantages are that
this type of material may not be breathable or safe and may be difficult to form a
shape that is comfortable to cover the nose and mouth.
Solution 02: make face shields instead of masks, disadvantages are that the
materials could cost more and it is also not as easy to carry around as a cloth
mask
Solution 03: Make a cloth mask using breathable material to cover ones nose
and mouth and elastics to hook over the ears. Advantages are that this material
is cost effective and easy to find and it is washable and reusable. It can also be
made by hand no machine needed.
