A.C.1.3- consequences of unreported crime.

Ripple effect- This has based on the idea of a pebble being dropped into a
pond which creates ripples that spread across the pond’s surface. For
crime this makes the crime which is unreported the pebble and means it
may not just affect the primary victim. This effect can occur for many
types of crimes. It is a both positive and negative consequence. It is
negative as it causes a crime to have multiple victims or people affected
by the crime. However, it can also be seen as positive as it is easier to
identify the victims and get them the help they need. For example, is
domestic abuse goes unreported, it can cause ripple effect that will harm
other beyond the victim. For example, children who witness the abuse
may suffer trauma or see violence as normal. This can lead to long term
emotional damage and unhealthy relationships in the future.

Cultural consequence-Different cultures may view different actions
differently. This means that some actions which are seen as illegal in the
uk are acceptable and legal to others from different cultures. It can be
seen as both a positive and negative consequence. it is negative as it may
change the way that a crime is seen and make it seem normalised other
cultures. However, for the people in the cultures it may be seen as
positive as they can continue to go ahead with their practices. an example
of this is FGM. If it goes unreported, it can lead to cultural consequences.
Not speaking out will allow practices within the community to carry on
which reinforces the belief that FGM is a normal and acceptable tradition.
This will make it harder to challenge and protect future generations of
girls from the same thing happening.

Decriminalisation-Some actions are widespread in society despite being
against the law. When certain crimes become widespread and the public
stop reporting it, it is no longer seen as a ‘real crime’, and campaigners
may demand a change in the law. it is both a positive and negative
consequence. it is negative as it creates an unrealistic statistic of the
number of crimes that happen. It may be seen as positive as it lowers the
crime rates and means that only serious crimes are reported. For
example, if drug use is increasingly decriminalised, it can lead to social
and legal consequences. For example, people may start to see drug use
as acceptable which could increase addiction rates. However, it can also
reduce the stigma around it.

Police prioritisation-the police have limited resources which means they
cannot investigate every crime, and they have had budget cuts, making it
difficult to choose which crimes to prioritise. Also, the home office has now
