NR_351 Week 5 Discussion, Using Evidence-Based Practice to Improve Patient Care
NR_351 Week 5 Discussion, Using Evidence-Based Practice to Improve Patient Care A nursing issue I am selecting to voice about, is medication error (problem). Medication errors happen all around the world, but they can be preventable. Some medication errors are reported, but many others are not. Medication errors don’t always cause death and might be a contributing factor to why some nurses don’t feel the need to report them. Medication errors can happen at any point in the course. It can happen due to miscommunication between the nurse and the doctor. Receiving an order over the phone and not reading the order back. Written orders can be quiet challenging to make out, so I am grateful for computerized orders. Fagondes (2016) argues that “the absence of computerized systems for drug prescriptions, poor infrastructure and the quality of materials and equipment, including those for individual protection, are also indifferent to the occurrence of medication errors” (p.4574). There many other ways medication errors can occur, but this is the example I chose to present. Like, I mentioned before medication errors can be preventable. To insure safe medication administration, us nurses must follow the 5 nursing rights (intervention) and communicate effective. We need to make sure we read back orders even if we are being rushed (comparison). If we follow these interventions, we can have a great outcome such as catching medication errors before they happen. We can save someone’s life and keep our license. (outcome) I would my search by clicking on the library guides, then search database for “CINAHL COMPLETE,” My search term is “Medication errors by nurses.” I would make sure I would select full text in order to read complete context. 4574.
