Clin Med: OB Exam
1. Day 1 = when bleeding starts
follicular phase= first 14 days, follicles grow and secrete estrogen, endometri-
um hypertrophies
luteal phase= second 14 days, after ovulation, corpus luteum created and
produces progesterone prominently & still estrogen, progesterone needed to
continue proliferation of tissue/vasculature
Progesterone drops leading to atrophy/shedding of endometrium: describe the
ovarian and endometrial cycle
2. 21-35 days: what is a normal range for cycle length
3. longer: younger women tend to have (longer/shorter) cycles
4. menarche median age= 12.4 yrs
mean cycle interval= 32 days in first gynecological year
Menstrual cycle interval= 21-45 days
,flow length= 7 days or less
menstrual product use= 3-6 tampons-pads per day: mean cycle interval = in first gynecolog-
ical year, how many days
menstrual product use= how many pads/tampons per day
5. amenorrhea= lack of menstrual periods
dysmenorrhea= painful menstrual periods
polymenorrhea= cycles less than 21 days: define: amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia
6. - regular, excessive bleeding
- flood >1 pad/tampon per hr or lasts > 7 days
,- usually ovulatory
- can cause anemia: what is menorrhagia & an associated complication
7. - bleed at irregular intervals
- includes bleeding between expected menstrual periods: what is metrorrhagia
8. prolonged/excessive bleeding happens irregularly and more frequently than
normal
(combo of menorrhagia and metrorrhagia): what is menometorrhagia
9. puberty= when secondary sexual characteristics appear
precocious puberty= onset at abnormally early age (girls= before 8, boys=
before 9): define puberty and precocious puberty
10. thelarche: word meaning onset of breast development
11. andrenarche-> axillary/pubic hair, body odor, acne: word meaning onset of androgen-de-
pendent changes
examples of these
12. menarche: word meaning onset of menstruation
, 13. 11-13.75 yrs: normal range for age of menarche
14. within 2-3 years after thelarche, usually at Tanner breast stage 4
can happen any time Tanner breast/genitalia stage 2 and on: when does menarche
typically occur in relation to development of secondary sex characteristics
when is it possible but uncommon
15. Catamenia= history of pt's menstrual cycles
[age of onset] x [days in cycle] x [flow duration]
(ex: catamenia= 13x28x5): how to write catamenia and what is it
16. correlate more with msk (growth plate) maturity than age: tanner stages correlate
more with than
