Personal Statement:
My name is XXXX. I am interested in studying master’s in social work has
developed over the last couple of years. I spent last year volunteering as a
community panel member for the Youth Offending Team, I have come to
discover that my passion lies in helping people.
I worked as part of a restorative justice initiative to help children address the
problems which have led them to commit crimes. Sitting in the panels gave
me an insight into the importance of actively listening without judgment and
gaining an understanding of underlying personal, family and social
disadvantages faced by young people. My job focused on reducing the risk of
reoffending.
I believe in supporting young people to undertake leisure activities within the
community. Such support involves a variety of reparation projects, working
alongside youth justice practitioners in the delivery of a range of intervention
programmes that were very useful and empowering.
I also worked as a volunteer for the Youth Offending Team as a community
panel member which made it possible to understand and empathise with the
children. These key skills are critical in establishing boundaries and
maintaining professionalism. They also strengthened my ability to implement
restorative and humanistic approaches that are key to social work. The
experience I gained makes it possible to work with vulnerable people to help
them achieve a holistic life.
I chose to pursue a degree in social work as I believe it will equip me with the
necessary skills to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people. My
academic journey has equipped me with a solid foundation for a career in
social work. In particular, I studied Bachelor of Laws LLB at the University of
East London, where I developed critical thinking, analytical and advocacy
skills that form the basis for my social work degree. I also did courses like
Human Rights Law and Family Law that broadened my understanding of the
systematic barriers faced by people, especially in marginalized communities.
