In the study of consumers and marketing, it’s essential to understand how consumer behavior drives marketing strategies. Consumers make purchasing decisions based on a complex mix of psychological, personal, social, and cultural factors. Marketers must analyze these influences to segment their audiences effectively, position their products, and create tailored marketing campaigns. By aligning product offerings with consumer needs and preferences, businesses can enhance customer satisfaction, build brand loyalty, and gain a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Lecture Engagement 3b: activity
Please watch the video and complete the activities in advance
of your lecture engagement session. Prepare to share your
thoughts and ideas with your peers.

1. Watch the short video via the link below about
Jordan Nike trainers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXeQJBghvRw

2. Conduct an audit of your wardrobe.
- How many pairs of shoes (footwear) do you own? (you should include all items
of footwear for internal/external use – slippers, trainers, boots, wellingtons etc.).
- Evaluate: Do you need all of those items…? How many pairs do you need?
- Take one category of footwear (e.g.– sports / leisure shoes). How many pairs of
this footwear category do you own? Why/when do you wear them? Reflect on
your decision-making process when you purchased some of these – did you
follow the 5 stages as outlined in the decision-making process? Was your
purchase a rational decision?
- Branded clothes – identify items of clothing with prominent branding. For each
branded item evaluate whether there was an alternative non-branded product
that served same function.
- Evaluate: Why did you buy the branded item? What does that brand signify?
What is the meaning of that brand to you?

Prepare to share the results of your audit with your fellow students.

3. Best essay exercise: Discussion Task
Two students of Marketing and Management are asked to write an essay on the
extent to which reference groups influence consumer behaviour.
Each student cited 6 sources (not because that is enough but because that is
what will fit on these slides).
Which student do you think wrote the best essay?
