B1 Aspects of the Course
The Role of the BSN Nurse in Promoting Community Health is an eight-week
course designed to educate students on the role and importance of registered
nurses in improving health and welfare in communities by using the nursing
process. They will recognize that community health nurses look at the needs of a
population from a broader perspective, not just individual needs. The goal of the
community health nurse is health promotion, disease prevention, and recognizing
the needs of the community as a whole (The Importance of Community Health
Nursing, 2025). This course will aid learners in developing the knowledge and skills
to work in a community health setting. It will also help students understand that,
although community health may not be their primary area of interest, community
health nursing will be integral to every aspect of their career.
Each week, for eight weeks, the students will be exposed to different
innovative learning activities based on the weekly key concepts essential to
understanding the role of the BSN nurse in community health nursing. These key
concepts will begin with the goals of community health nursing, assessing the
needs and access to healthcare within the community, social factors that influence
health and disease prevention, strategies to help promote healthy choices and
lifestyles, identifying vulnerable populations, the importance of the community

health nurse in maternal and child health, the importance of understanding
mental health disparities, and the roles and importance of the community health
nurse in community emergency preparedness and response during a pandemic.
All these concepts will be addressed using different evidence-based learning
strategies that will allow for complete immersion into the world of community
health nursing.
The relevance of this course to professional nursing branches from the
outline set by the
American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), The Essentials: Core
Competencies for Professional Nursing Education (2021). It offers theoretical and
practicum approaches focusing on the assessment and analysis of the health and
wellness of community populations. According to the AACN Essentials of
Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nurses, “promoting health requires an
educational focus that differs significantly from the illness-focused acute care skills
traditionally taught in baccalaureate programs” (American Association of Colleges
of Nursing [AACN], 2013, p. 7). The competencies, concepts, and teaching
strategies taught in this course are not limited to just community health nursing
but can be and should be utilized throughout the BSN curriculum. This will give
the students an appreciation for the scope and importance of population health in
the personal and public health environments.
