Theory and Practice Assignment: Interactional Theoretical Approach
The Rodriquez family faces significantly high dysfunctions marred with intergenerational
traumas and conflicts. These issues requires comprehensive approach and interventions
supported with the theoretical frameworks. The interactional theory will be used to analyze the
Rodriquez’s case to determine their dynamics and strategies to address the dysfunctions.
Theory Description
Thornberry initially developed The interactional theory in 1987, focusing on delinquency
among other antisocial behaviours in society. Another prominent developer of the theory is
Lawrence Shulman, who concentrates on designing the approach as a helping model for
collaborative and strength-based care for clients (Shulman, 2016). The theory posited that all
behaviours were learned and rooted in weaker social bonds, which then built defiant behaviours.
This theory has been modified and adapted to other areas, including the life course perspective
and accounting for various factors studied and understood in contemporary society. The theory is
rooted in the conception that human behaviours are rooted in multiple intersecting interpersonal,
individual and community elements affecting their behavioural outcomes rather than individual
issues. This theory was based on structural family therapy, developed earlier and emphasizing
family patterns and systems (Theodori, 2023). This theory is used because it prioritizes a
strength-based approach and builds a collaborative approach with the clients. Additionally, child
safety is prioritized, and the skills integrated into this model involve the most effective tools for
investigating and assessing the presenting issues in the casework.
