BIO145 – Marine Biology – Lesson 1 Lab Section
1. Describe the function of each of the following pieces of safety equipment
and describe how each might be used. (5 points)
a. eye wash
b. fire blanket
c. shower
d. chemical spill kits
e. biological spill solution
a. Eye Wash is used during a chemical splash in the eyes. When this happens,
clean the eyes by using the eye wash fountain for 15 – 30 minutes to flush the
eyes. Remove contact lenses before using eye wash.
b. Fire blanket is used to extinguish the fire.
c. Shower is used when a fire or a chemical spill happens. Water is poured over
the body for 15 – 30 minutes flushing down the chemical off the body.
d. Chemical spill kit is used to clean chemically contaminated materials in case of
chemical spills in the lab. The opposite of the chemical is used to neutralize the
spill. For acid or base spill, an opposite of base or acid is used. Use soap and
water to clean body immediately.
e. Biological spill solution is 10% bleach solution used to clean biological materials
like harmful bacteria and viruses.
2. Briefly describe a situation when each of the following waste disposal
containers would be used and give examples of the waste involved. (2
points)
a. broken glass container
b. biological hazardous materials container

, Broken glass container is used when broken glass materials need to be disposed
off. The waste might involve broken class utensils, decoration pieces, windows etc.
The disposal container ensures that person handling the disposal doesn’t get hurt.
Biological hazardous materials container is used to dispose off disease causing
organisms like bacteria and virus that can transfer or transmit to other people
coming in contact like those handling the trash. An example is the disposal of
medicinal waster of elderly at home like syringes, needles or other used materials
like cloth that might contain blood especially from a hepatitis B patient.
3. Metric Measurements: Perform each of the following conversions. (12
points)
a. An adult bottlenose dolphin is 118 inches in length. Given that one
inch = 2.54 cm, convert this length to centimeters.
one inch = 2.54 cm
118 inches X 2.54 cm = 299.72 cm
b. While conducting a study along a rocky shore, a starfish with a width
of 4.5 inches is noted. Convert this width to kilometers.
1 Inch = 0.0000254 Kilometer
4.5 inches X 0.0000254 km = 0.0001143km
c. If 300 ml of saltwater are poured from a 2-liter container, how many
milliliters are left in the original container?
1L = 1000 ml
2L = 1000 X 2 = 2000 ml
