DISCUSSION WEEK 7 QUESTION AND ANSWERS 2025-2026
Discussion - Week 7
Case Of Deidre: Feminist Theory Is Used To Conceptualize The Problem. According To Feminist
Philosophy (Herlihy & Park, 2016, P. 367), "Women And Other Subsidiary Groups In Society Should
Enjoy Political, Economic, And Social Rights Equal To Males And Other Dominant Groups."
Presenting Problem:
Deidre Is Feeling Guilty And Anxious About Having An Abortion When She Was 18 Years Old. Her
Fear Stems From Her Partner, Tom’s Pro-Life Stance On The Issue. Deidre Is Concerned That Telling
Tom She Had An Abortion Will Cause Him To Abandon Her. Deidre Is Also Concerned That If She
Does Not Inform Tom About The Abortion And He Learns About It From Someone Else, He Will Be
Enraged And Likely Abandon Her. As Her Counselor, I Need To Assist Her In Changing Her
Perspective On Her Situation. Instead Of Deidre Focusing On What Is Thought To Be The Proper
Course To Pursue Because Of Her Gender, Feminist Counselors Assist Clients In Examining The
Broad Range Of Possibilities Open To Them (Herlihy & Park, 2016, Pg. 375).
Treatment Goals:
Her Treatments Goals Are To Help Her Transcend The Feelings She's Accumulated Over The Years,
Reclaim Her Confidence, And Stop Feeling Guilty About The Actions She's Taken Previously.
Equality, Independence/Interdependence, Empowerment, Self-Nurturance, And Respecting Variety
Are Five Aims Articulated By Enns (2004). (Herlihy & Park, 2016, P.375).
Identify Theory And Explain At Least Two Techniques/Interventions:
Reframing And Relabeling Are Two Treatments I'd Like To See Deidra Implement. "Changing The
Border Of Orientation For Looking At An Individual's Behavior Is Referred To As Reframing" (Herlihy
& Park, 2016, P.
376). To Relabel Means To Shift A Person's Negative Perception Of Their Difficulties To A Positive
One.
Changing Deidre's Mind About Her Decision To Get An Abortion At The Age Of 18 Was In Her Best
Interests. She Might Never Have Left The Position She Was In If She Hadn't Had An Abortion, And
Then She Would Have Never Met Tom If She Hadn't Gone To College Out Of State. This, In Turn,
Alters Her Own Framework As Well As The Milieu In Which She Found Herself At The Time.
Assertiveness Training: This Intervention Will Provide Her With The Assurance She Needs To Inform
Tom Regarding Her Earlier Decision And Understand That Whichever Occurs Will Be In Her Best
Interests. According To Herlihy And Park (2016) (P. 377), "When Women Don't Feel Empowered,
They May Not Even Behave Assertively And Thus Give Up Some Control Over Their Lives."
