Hours: 2

This paper consists of 11 pages.

Total marks: 80

Examination briefing:
• Good luck with this examination.
• Do not print the instruction manuscript. Please read and engage with the electronic version
on your screen.
• This is a closed-book exam—use of the prescribed textbook and ChatGPT is not permitted.
• References are included in the text and a reference list is included on the final page of this
document. Do NOT follow/visit the sources during the examination; if you do, that will be
considered dishonest conduct. I included the reference list to merely acknowledge the
sources that inspired the case.
• The case incorporates real-life entities and experiences (e.g., an institution like UNISA;
people, like me), and blends them with fiction. Except for myself, all characters in the
narratives are either fictional or pseudonymised – no identification with actual persons
(living or deceased) is intended or should be inferred.
• For all calculations you are instructed to perform, only write down the answer, do not
display the formula and sequence of calculations leading to the answer.
• Do not cheat! We closely scrutinise IRIS video recordings for dishonest behaviour.
o Ensure your face is always fully visible.
o If you need to make notes on paper, show both sides of the blank sheet to the
camera and state, "this blank sheet is for making notes."

, ii

o Before taking a bathroom break, look at the camera and say, "I am taking a
bathroom break; I’ll be back now."
• Do not write this exam at your workplace; you should be on study leave.
• Do not use your work PC, as permission levels might block IRIS.
• Write this exam in a quiet venue. If you are not alone, ask not to be disturbed during the
exam.
• Do not wear earphones or air pods!
• Do not use your smartphone or a secondary laptop/PC.
• If you need to scan a document as part of your solutions, ensure the scanning is done in
full view of the camera.
• The case study is inspired by real events. Read the case and questions thoroughly before
starting the exam.
• While you may use Microsoft Excel for calculations, you must start with a blank sheet and
are not permitted to prepopulate worksheets with formulas.
• Please read the additional student instructions below.

Additional student instructions
1. Students must upload their answer scripts in a single PDF file (answer scripts must not be
password protected or uploaded as “read only” files)
2. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
3. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.
4. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility and that
the correct answer script file has been uploaded.
5. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examinations platforms
(including the invigilator cell phone application) will not be marked and no opportunity will
be granted for resubmission. Only the last answer file uploaded within the stipulated
submission duration period will be marked.
6. Mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No opportunity for
resubmission will be granted.
7. Mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
8. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
9. Students who have not utilised the proctoring tool will be deemed to have transgressed
Unisa’s examination rules and will have their marks withheld. If a student is found to have
been outside the proctoring tool for a total of 10 minutes during their examination session,
they will be considered to have violated Unisa’s examination rules and their marks will be
withheld. For examinations which use the IRIS invigilator system, IRIS must be recording
throughout the duration of the examination until the submission of the examinations scripts.
10. Students have 48 hours from the date of their examination to upload their invigilator results
from IRIS. Failure to do so will result in students deemed not to have utilized the proctoring
tools.
11. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the examinations will be subjected to
disciplinary processes. Students may not communicate with any other person or request
assistance from any other person during their examinations. Plagiarism is a violation of
academic integrity and students who plagiarise, copy from published work or Artificial
Intelligence Software (eg ChatGPT) or online sources (eg course material), will be in
violation of the Policy on Academic Integrity and the Student Disciplinary Code and may be
referred to a disciplinary hearing. Unisa has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any
other forms of academic dishonesty.
12. Listening to audio (music) and making use of audio-to-text software is strictly prohibited
during your examination session unless such usage of the software is related to a student’s
assistive device which has been so declared. Failure to do so will be a transgression of
Unisa’s examination rules and the student's marks will be withheld.
13. Students are provided 30 minutes to submit their answer scripts after the official
examination time. Students who experience technical challenges should report the

challenges to the SCSC on 080 000 1870 or their College exam support centres (refer to
the Get help during the examinations by contacting the Student Communication Service
Centre [unisa.ac.za]) within 30 minutes. Queries received after 30 minutes of the official
assessment duration time will not be responded to. Submissions made after the official
assessment time will be rejected according to the examination regulations and will not be
marked. Only communication received from your myLife account will be considered.
14. Non-adherence to the processes for uploading assessment responses will not qualify the
student for any special concessions or future assessments.
15. Queries that are beyond Unisa’s control include the following: a. Personal network or
service provider issues
b. Load shedding/limited space on personal computer
c. Crashed computer
d. Non-functioning cameras or web cameras
e. Using work computers that block access to the myExams site (employer firewall
challenges)
f. Unlicensed software (eg license expires during exams)

Postgraduate students experiencing the above challenges are advised to apply for an
aegrotat and submit supporting evidence within ten days of the examination session.
Students will not be able to apply for an aegrotat for a third examination opportunity.
Postgraduate/undergraduate students experiencing the above challenges in their second
examination opportunity will have to reregister for the affected module.
16. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the examinations will be subjected to
disciplinary processes. UNISA has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any other forms
of academic dishonesty.
17. Students experiencing network or load shedding challenges are advised to apply together
with supporting evidence for an Aegrotat within 3 days of the examination session.

Case

Noma Nkosi, a 20-year-old with a visual impairment, is a second-year student in the BSc Computing
programme1 at the University of South Africa (Unisa). Until the end of 2024, she participated in Project Six
Spoken Breaths, led by the School of Computing. This initiative brought together researchers, academics,
and students to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) tutor to assist students with visual impairments. The
AI, housed in specially built air pods with a powerful microprocessor, is called TWO AUDIRE.

TWO AUDIRE facilitates interaction with coursework and assessments using automatic speech recognition
and natural language processing. It integrates with the module site (including content like assessment or
exam instructions), the Internet, and a virtual word processing application that converts spoken answers to
text. For instance, Noma can ask TWO AUDIRE to read Assessment 2 and its questions, then capture her
verbal responses in the virtual application. TWO AUDIRE can convert the completed answer sheet to a
PDF and submit it via the assessment portal. Importantly, its machine-learning model is designed not to
provide verbatim answers to assessment questions, ensuring students adhere to ethical and honest
conduct in their academic work.

While TWO AUDIRE has improved Noma's interaction with coursework and assessments, she hopes for a
more immersive experience by attending hybrid classes offered by some lecturers. One such lecturer, Dr
Emil Van Der Poll, conducts face-to-face classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 18:30 to 20:30 at the
Florida Campus. These sessions are also streamed and recorded using three cameras for remote and later
viewing. However, Noma faces challenges attending these sessions due to unreliable transportation.

Inspired by the success of Bolt for Women2, Noma conceptualised Bolt Vision, a service for visually
impaired students. With assistance from TWO AUDIRE, users could hail Bolt taxis for travel between home
and campus. Collaborating with academics from the School of Computing, Noma drafted a business case
for the project, proposing her roles as project sponsor and end-user. She also suggested naming it Project
Vision, which involves integrating TWO AUDIRE into Bolt’s e-hailing app. Key features of TWO AUDIRE
for this project include:

1. Engaging in natural conversations to request rides exclusively from certified Bolt Vision drivers via the
app.
2. Evaluating and communicating driver ratings to the user.
3. Managing payments.
4. Providing real-time updates on time and distance for pickups and drop-offs.
5. Initiating in-app calls for user-driver communication.

Bolt Vision drivers, who also serve regular customers, are trained and certified to assist visually impaired
students. For such requests, drivers must guide the student from their house to the car and, upon arrival,
escort them to the entrance of a campus building. However, navigating corridors and staircases inside
campus buildings remains a challenge due to safety concerns like bumping into staff or other students. To

1
Noma will complete the degree in 2035 due to her visual impairment and her involvement in projects aimed at improving the
course's accessibility for students with disabilities.
2
In an effort to combat gender-based violence, Bolt introduced an e-hailing that “enables female passengers to request rides from
female drivers only” (see Times Live, 2021, para. 1)
