• A planned surgical incision on the perineum and the posterior vaginal wall in
the second stage of labor.
Indications-
1. Large fetal head
2. Elderly primigravida
3. Breech presentation
4. Forceps delivery
5. Shoulder dystocia
Timing- When the perineum is thinned and bulging, with the peak of contraction,
just prior to crowning.
Procedure- Episiotomy scissor
10ml of 1% lidocaine
Suture used that is absorbable- Chromic catgut, Vicryl
Types(common)- 1. Median
2. Mediolateral
