POTENTIAL UNDERLYING PROBLEMS OF YALTA
• USA’s view of democracy would mean that their area of Europe would have
freedom of speech and elections
• USSR view of communism means their area will be run by communist party that
represents the good of the people and they will work for the good of the nation
• This will eventually lead to mistrust and suspicion
• And the never-ending battle of ideologies
CHANGES BETWEEN YALTA AND POTSDAM
USA: Roosevelt died à replaced by Truman
Truman was very anti communist
GREAT BRITAIN: Churchills consecutive party was defeated à replaced by Clement
Atlee
USSR: they liberated Eastern Europe from communism
à they started putting in sympathetic governments in these countries
sympathetic governments – a government that is on your side ideologically
Stalin did not let these countries have free elections like they discussed at Yalta
• The night before Potsdam , Truman told Stalin that the USA had successfully
tested nuclear weapons

à main objective for this meeting was to finalise the post – war settlement and put into
action all the things agreed upon at Yalta

• Germany de – Nazified and the war crime trials must be held
• Agreed Germany would be split into 4

• Disagreement over Germany
à Stalin wanted to cripple it to prevent future threat and USA wants to help it
recover
