MODULE: BECOMING A TEACHER
Assignment 5 Portfolio of Evidence
Section 1: Theoretical Perspectives on the Seven Roles of Educators
1. Describe each of the seven roles of educators based on the literature.
1. Learning Mediator
Educators as learning mediators facilitate meaningful learning by adapting
content to learners’ diverse needs. Killen (2015) emphasizes that mediation
involves scaffolding, questioning, and creating inclusive environments that
promote critical thinking.
In practice, a Grade 7 Natural Sciences teacher might introduce the concept of
photosynthesis by first activating prior knowledge through a brainstorming
session. They then use diagrams, group discussions, and experiments to
deepen understanding. The teacher circulates, asking probing questions and
clarifying misconceptions—ensuring learners construct their own knowledge.

2. Interpreter and Designer of Learning Programmes and Materials
This role requires educators to interpret curriculum documents and design
learning materials that suit learners’ contexts. According to the Department of
Higher Education and Training (DHET, 2015), teachers must align content
with outcomes and adapt materials for accessibility.
, For example, a Foundation Phase teacher may modify a Life Skills worksheet
to include visuals and simplified language for learners with reading
difficulties. They might also incorporate local examples to make content
relatable.

3. Assessor
Teachers assess learners’ progress using formal and informal methods.
Assessment must be valid, reliable, and fair (Gravett & Geyser, 2004).
Educators use rubrics, observations, and tests to evaluate learning and
provide feedback. In a high school English class, a teacher might use peer
assessments during essay writing. Learners exchange drafts, provide feedback
using a rubric, and revise accordingly. This promotes self-reflection and
deeper learning.

4. Leader, Administrator, and Manager
Educators manage classrooms, lead learning, and handle administrative
duties. According to Van der Mescht & Tyala (2008), effective leadership
involves planning, discipline, and communication.
