Exp. No. 01: Modelling, Assembly and Drafting of Safety Relief
valve.

Aim:
To create various parts of Cylindrical Safety Relief valve and do assembly and
drafting of the same.
Hardware Required:

• Processor: 2 GHz dual core or higher (2.5 GHz recommended).
• RAM: 8 GB or higher (16 GB recommended).
• Hard Drive: At least 20 GB of available hard disk space.
• Graphics Card: NVIDIA Quadro or AMD FirePro workstation graphics card with
at least 1 GB of video memory (2 GB or higher recommended).
• Display:1280x1024 display resolution or higher, true colour (32-bit).
Software Required:
Any CAD software (e.g.- Solidworks, Siemens NX, AutoCAD, etc.)
Software Introduction:
We have used Solidworks 2021 to create the model and assembly of Cylindrical Relief
Valve. Solidworks is a 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software used to design and create
3D models of parts, assemblies and 2D drawings. The key features of Solidworks include:
• Part modelling- Allows you to design simple to complex 3D parts by sketching 2D
profiles and extrusions, revolves, sweeps, lofts, etc.
• Assembly modelling- Lets you assemble multiple parts into complete products using
features like mate constraints, constraints and motion studies.
• Drawings- Generates multi view 2D drawings from 3D models with automatic
dimensioning and ballooning.
• Simulation- Performs static and dynamic simulations to validate and optimize
designs before manufacturing. This includes FEA (finite element analysis), motion and
fluid flow studies.
• Sheet metal design- Contains tools to design sheet metal parts and flat pattern
unfolding.
• Mold design- Contains dedicated tools to design plastic injection moulds and die
casting moulds.
• Surfacing- Allows you to create complex organic shapes using NURBS (non-uniform
rational B-spline) surfaces.

, • Rendering- Utilizes photorealistic rendering techniques to provide realistic
visualizations of designs.
Overall, Solidworks can be a powerful tool for creating professional 3D CAD designs,
assemblies and drawings that accurately represent and document your concepts and

technical ideas.
Description of the Component:
Cylindrical relief valves are used to relieve excess pressure in systems like hydraulic
systems, pneumatic systems, and compressed air systems. They function as a type of safety
valve.
A cylindrical relief valve consists of:
• A valve body - This is the main cylindrical housing of the valve. It has inlet and
outlet ports for fluid to enter and exit.
• A valve seat - This is a circular surface within the valve body that forms a seal when
the valve closes.
• A valve spring - This spring applies an upward force to the valve poppet to keep the
valve closed under normal operating pressure.
• A valve poppet - This is a disc or needle that sits on the valve seat. When fluid
pressure overcomes the spring force, the poppet lifts off the seat and opens the valve.
• A valve stem - This stem transfers the fluid pressure to the underside of the poppet.
When the fluid pressure in the system rises above the relief pressure set by the spring
force, the poppet lifts off the seat and opens the valve. This allows excess fluid to flow out
the outlet port, preventing overpressure within the system. Once pressure drops below the
relief pressure, the spring closes the valve again.

, Cylindrical relief valves are available in a range of sizes, relief pressures, flow
capacities and material options to suit different applications. They are an important safety
component to protect systems from overpressure damage.

Procedure:

• Part Drawing and Modelling- Create various parts of the Cylindrical Relief Valve
by using various commands and features.
Commands Used-
1. Sketch→ Revolve→ Thread→ Sketch→ Extrude→ Mirror Feature
2. Sketch→ Helix Spiral→ Sweep→ Cut Extrude
3. Sketch→ Boss Extrude→ Chamfer→ Fillet→ Thread
4. Sketch→ Boss Extrude→ Cut Extrude→ Chamfer
5. Sketch→ Boss Extrude→ Cut Extrude→ Boss Extrude→ Cut Extrude→
Chamfer→ Fillet→ Thread
6. Sketch → Revolve → Cut Extrude→ Thread
7. Sketch → Revolve → Cut Extrude→ Circular Pattern → Thread

• Assembly- Select the different parts made earlier and assemble them to make the
Relief Valve.
Commands Used- Mates: Concentric, Coincident, Parallel.

• Drafting-
1. Select “Make Drawing from Part/Assembly” and start drafting various parts
and their assembly.
