Practical Research Application

For module 1, an analysis had to be conducted on the literacy program at Public School
#3 in West New York, New Jersey. As the survey on the literacy program was conducted, there
was an area that was evident that needed to be addressed, the level of family engagement and
parental support at home. Throughout the school day, students receive the required instructional
time for different content areas to help them achieve their goals and be successful. However, in
some cases, it may not be enough and schools need to find ways to get parents and families
involved in their children's education. Currently, P.S #3 does try to hold some events to reach out
to families to get them engaged. We've held a couple of literacy nights with the reading specialist
to encourage parents to help their children read more at home, we've held Title I workshops on
the importance of early literacy skills for parents of younger students, and our fourth grade ELA
teacher has organized book tastings, where families can come in and see presentations on books
their students have read.Although PS number 3 has made an effort towards family engagement, I
believe we can do more. We need to ensure that families are working with their children at home
and providing them with the same support and practice they get at school, so they can further
grow and develop fundamental skills that they will be needing all through their adult life.

Early Literacy Building

According to Scharnagh and Smidt, “research has revealed positive relationships between
the support of emergent literacy in preschools and children's emergent literacy skills as well as
their academic success” (pg 198, 2025). Literacy skills are foundational skills that need to be
taught and mastered in order for students to continue to learn and grow. In this course, we've
learned that students who don't master early literacy skills have a hard time with reading fluency
and comprehension, which will continue to make reading texts difficult for them. Many districts
are now offering early childhood education programs for families and introducing basic literacy
skills from an early age. At P.S #3, there are Pre-k3 and Pre-k4 classrooms where students are
being introduced to phonics and phonological awareness skills to better prepare them for the
upper grades and setting them up with skills to be successful. Preschool teachers meet with
parents and encourage them to continue working on building their child's literacy skills at home
through books and pictures. There are also many kid friendly videos that parents can use at home
to reinforce what students are learning in school. Teaching students these skills early does make
