3.1 In English the spelling and pronunciation do not necessarily correspond with each other. Use the

3.2 Homonyms are understood as words that have the same sound but differ in meaning. Bearing this
explanation in mind, study the following sets of words and form two sentences per set. Make sure that
there is enough context in each sentence to show the difference in meaning between the words in a set.

Read the following passage and address the questions that follow:

Lay Still is a relentlessly paced and ruthlessly efficient futuristic thriller. It aspires to be a kind of low-tech,
sci-fi, cyberpunk story, but is really a fairly traditional crime novel – stealthy and nasty and wonderfully well written
– with an frequent amount of (very graphic) violence and some late-in-the-game plot twists. The aesthetic here runs
everywhere between Blade Runner and Sin City (both the movie and the graphic novel) – the author’s absorption of
the crime genre appears to be encyclopaedic – but the prose most closely resembles Lee Child’s (the Jack Reacher
series). The style – quick, mean, mechanical, technical, airtight – is very contemporary and very, very brutal.

Finance Minister Tito Mboweni is reported to have said that he did not support the government’s decision to
continue with the ban on alcohol and cigarette sales when the country moved from level 5 to level 4 of the
lockdown, as it resulted in a huge loss of tax revenue. SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter, confirmed that R1.5
bn in tax revenue, which could have been generated from the sale of alcohol and tobacco since the lockdown, had
been lost. “I didn’t like the continuous ban of tobacco and alcohol but I lost the debate and therefore I had to toe
the line,” Mboweni said.
