This comprehensive test review contains over 100 verified, exam-style questions and expertly written answers based on the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations, 7th Edition, specifically for Test D. The content has been curated to assist candidates preparing for Firefighter I and II certification exams, with a strong focus on real-world scenarios and NFPA-compliant knowledge. Key topics covered in this review include: Building construction materials and their behavior under fire conditions, such as wood, metal, masonry, gypsum, lath and plaster, and synthetic wood products. Structural collapse recognition and safety, with detailed breakdowns of collapse types, collapse zones, warning signs, and fire stages that increase collapse risks. Technical rescue support, including trench rescues, vehicle extrication procedures, confined space entry, lifting/stabilizing tools, and patient care protocols. Vehicle anatomy for extrication, safety systems (airbags, pretensioners), glass removal, and hybrid vehicle hazards. Firefighting foam types and application techniques, including Class A and B foams, foam proportioning systems (eductor, injection, premix), nozzle selection, aeration, and methods of foam deployment. Hazardous materials response, with coverage of LNG/CNG incidents, pressure vessels, BLEVEs, fuel fire control, and safe operating procedures near flammable gases. This study guide is ideal for: Fire Science students in technical colleges or universities Fire academy trainees preparing for national or state certification Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Public Safety students involved in integrated rescue operations Candidates preparing for written exams under NFPA 1001, 472/1072, and 1145 guidelines Whether you're working toward passing your final certification test or reinforcing classroom learning with scenario-driven material, this document provides the depth, accuracy, and clarity required for confident exam performance. Know about the common building materials (Wood, Masonry, and Metal.) -

🧠 ANSWER ✔✔- Wood: The most common building material used in North

America & is the main component of many structural assemblies. Size and

moisture content affect how wood reacts to fire conditions.

- Masonry: Includes bricks, stones, & concrete blocks. Fire and exposure to

high temperatures has minimal effect.

- Metal: Metal building materials commonly used include cast iron, steel,

aluminum, and copper. The effect of heat and fire on metal depends on the

type of metal and whether or not the metal is exposed or covered.

How does steel react under fire conditions and how does that effect the

structure of the building? - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔Steel structural members

,lengthen (elongate) when heated. The elongation tends to push the walls

out. If the steel buckles and fails somewhere in the middle, it tends to pull

walls in.

Know about reinforced concrete, Gypsum, Lath and plaster, &

Glass/fiberglass. - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔- Reinforced concrete: Concrete can be

poured at the construction site or formed into precast sections and

transported to a site. Internally fortified with steel reinforcement bars

(rebar). Performs well under fire conditions, but can lose strength through

spalling.

- Gypsum: Also known as drywall or sheetrock. Is an inorganic product

from which plaster and wallboards are constructed. Has high water content

that absorbs a great deal of heat as the moisture evaporates.

- Lath & Plaster: construction is a combination of materials. Horizontal

wood strips called lath are nailed to wall studs and covered with a mixture

of plaster to form an interior wall finish. Can be very difficult to penetrate

with axes or hand tools. Walls can also conceal fire within the cavity

between surfaces and add fuel to the fire in the form of the studs and lath.

- Glass/Fiberglass: Glass is not typically used for structural support. Used

in sheet form for doors and windows and in block form for non-load-bearing

, walls. Conventional glass is not an effective barrier to fire extension.

Fiberglass is typically used for insulation and is located between

interior/exterior walls and between ceilings and roofs. The materials used to

bind the fiberglass may be combustible and difficult to extinguish.

Some products used in construction may be highly combustible, produce

significant toxic gases, or can rapidly deteriorate. What are there products?

- 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔- Plywood

- Fiberboard

- Paneling

- Particle board

- Oriented strand board (OSB)

Know about Finger-jointed timber, Laminated timber, MDF, Particle board

and synthetic wood. - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔- Finger-Jointed Timber: Small pieces

of wood that are joined into longer boards using epoxy resins and glues.

- Laminated Timber: Also known as plywood or glulam (glued laminated)

wood, these materials are sheets of wood often used for roof and floor

decking, walls, and stair treads.
