AP Human Geography: Exam with Questions
and 100% Correct Answers/ Graded A+
Look at the answers and check if they are completed or not, u can highlight the ones that are not
completely completed

Spatial Association: Spatial association is how things are similarly arranged in space (income, life
expectancy, crime, liquor stores)

Absolute Location: The exact position of an object or place, measured within the spatial coordinates
of a grid system.

Relative Location: The position of a place relative to places and physical features around it. (e.g. the
house is near a yellow bank)

Understanding of Earth's Surface:

Place: A specific point on Earth distinguished by a particular character.

Region: An area distinguished by a unique combination of trends or features

GPS or. GIS: GPS means Global Positioning System and it determines the exact location of where you
are through satellites, tracking stations, and receivers. GIS, on the other hand, is Geographic
Information System and it captures, stores, and queries information.

Physiological Density: The number of people supported by a unit of arable land

World Population over Time: In the beginning, it was Stage 1(low birth rates, high death rates, and
low NIR) because everyone was hunters and gatherers and lived in a dangerous environment. Then
we evolved and went towards Stage 2 (increasing birth, decreasing death, and increasing NIR) due to
the agricultural and Medical Revolution. As time passed we went to Stage 3, which was due to
people moving into urban areas more. Then we went to Stage 4 because of fewer children, and this
slowly led us to Stage 5 which is high death, low birth, and decreasing or negative NIR. It will increase
as the years pass, 2100 11 billion people will live on the planet

India vs. UK in arithmetic density: India and the United Kingdom have approximately the same
arithmetic density: so that means they have the same number of people per area of land.(200 or
above people per square kilometer)

Denmark nation-state(pg.271-272): A nation state is an independent state that is comprised of
people of a common descent. Denmark is a nation state because it consists of people that share the
same ethnicity. In more simpler terms: Danish people spoke Danish, so they created a state that
would have people of the same descent (Danish people). Thus, they made a country that consisted
of the same type of culture and language.

vegetative planting: reproduction of plants by direct cloning of existing plants such as cutting stems
and dividing roots.

, seed agriculture: reproduction of plants through annual planting of seeds that result from sexual
fertilization used by most current farmers.

Agricultural density: the ratio of farmers to arable land

CBR v. CDR: Crude Birth Rate is number of births per 1,000 people and CDR is number of deaths per
1,000 people.

Population Pyramid: a bar graph that displays the percentage of a place’s population for each age
and gender (JAPAN- they will have less children; upside down pyramid)

Thomas Malthus Theory: the theory that food production and population growth are somehow
interrelated and that world’s rate of population increase was far outrunning the development of food
supply; food-arithmetic + people-geometric; he can be proven wrong bcz he never thought about
how his theory would change in the future (just thought abt his time) and that now we have much
more technology advancement and we can produce food MUCH faster than human development
growth

Push v. Pull Factors: A push factor is a factor that induces people to move out of their present
location, but a pull factor induces people to move to a new location.

Environmental Determinism: It said that environment limits or defines what humans do. This was
true before, but now it is proven wrong by possibilism.

Brazil (Ch.7.1.5): Brazil struggles with defining its population by race or ethnicity. Like the U.S, Brazil is
composed of people whose ancestors emigrated from many places. Portugal and West Africa are the
leading places, but other large numbers are from other European countries, Japan, and Southwest
Asia.

Robinson projection: the oval shaped version of the map (pg 10)- useful for displaying info across
oceans. Major disadvantage: by allocating space to the oceans, land areas are much smaller than on
interrupted maps of the same size

Mercator projection: the square version of the map (pg 10)- advantages: shape distorted very little,
direction is consistent, and map is rectangular. Greatest disadvantage: relative size is grossly distorted
toward the poles, making high-latitude places look much larger than they are.

Migration of interregional: Migration from one region of a country to another. (e.g. state to state)

Migration of intraregional : Migration within one region. (e.g. city to city)

Interurban: located in or operating in two or more cities or towns

Intraurban: within an urban area

Asians came into the U.S: occurred primarily on the West Coast during the California Gold Rush,
starting in the 1850s; California (west). They came for cheap jobs in the beginning, and were mostly
hired as railroad workers. (And nowadays they come for jobs and chain migration)

Counterurbanization: Net migration from urban to rural areas.
