QUESTION 1.1 — Participants that may influence transport at PepsiCo
Q: Which participants influence transport, and how do they affect transport at
PepsiCo?
Answer:
Transportation within supply chain management is a coordinated activity shaped by
multiple stakeholders, each exerting unique influences on cost, efficiency, and reliability.
Six key participants stand out: shippers, carriers, intermediaries, regulators,
receivers, and technology providers.
• Shippers initiate product flows by determining shipment size, packaging, routing,
and carrier choice. Their decisions directly shape service levels and logistics
costs. At PepsiCo, this influence is strategic: bottling plants and regional
distribution centres are configured to reduce lead times while lowering costs. By
integrating warehousing with third-party partners, PepsiCo maximises
consolidation opportunities and enhances distribution efficiency.
• Carriers physically move goods, and their reliability and flexibility define service
quality. In SADC, refrigerated fleets are essential to safeguard beverages. For
PepsiCo, carriers not only protect product integrity but also counter infrastructure
challenges through multimodal solutions that address poor road conditions and
seasonal disruptions.
