Therapeutic Psychology - PYC4809 Assignment 3 (Exam Portfolio) 2025 (Unique Number: 647028) - Due 25 September 2025; 100 % TRUSTED workings, Expert Solved, Explanations and Solutions. For assistance call or W.h.a.t.s.a.p.p us on ...(.+.2.5.4.7.7.9.5.4.0.1.3.2)........... Task 1: Case study READ THE FOLLOWING CASE STUDY AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW: Case study Dudu: Leaving her husband and child Assume the perspective of a Person-centred approach, and show how you would proceed with Dudu who comes to a community counselling centre at the recommendation of a friend, who expresses concern that Dudu intends to leave her child. The friend thinks she is confused and needs professional help. Some background data: Dudu was born and reared in KwaZulu-Natal. Her father is a reformed alcoholic who drank heavily when the client was a child. Both parents are religious, and the father is described as a strict fundamentalist. Dudu has a younger brother who works as a police officer and is described as the family favourite. She says her parents were stricter with her than with their son and emphasised the importance of marriage as well as the woman’s dependent and inferior role in that relationship. 1 Dudu dropped out of high school in the Grade 9. She worked as a domestic helper in Durban until marrying and moving to Johannesburg three years ago. She then worked as a waitress. Her husband says that they have had no fights or arguments during their three-year marriage, and the client agrees. Six months ago, Dudu gave birth to a baby boy. There were no medical complications, and she maintains that she adjusted well to the baby, but she reports just not being able to feel much of anything except tired. Two months ago, she and her husband moved to Bloemfontein so that he could take up a new job. She began working as a cashier at a shop. In the course of her work, she began to have a series of brief sexual affairs with fellow workers. At the same time, although her husband is happy with his new job, it does not pay well. He has asked her to try to find a second job or to take overtime hours at the shop. Dudu is considering leaving her husband and her child, although she is uncertain how she would continue to support herself financially. She is also concerned with what would happen to her son, because her husband cannot look after him financially. She insists that she does not want to take the child with her. Questions 1. What is your attitude about Dudu wanting to leave her husband and her child? What are your values on this matter, and how would they influence the way you would work with her? 2. Assume that Dudu asked you for your advice regarding her plan to leave her husband and child. What would you say? To what degree do you think Dudu can function without advice? 3. If you accepted Dudu as a client, in what ways do you think you could be of most help to her? 4. Are there feelings about herself and her husband that Dudu is currently unwilling to accept? 5. How would a person-centred approach help with acceptance of feelings and with denied parts of the self? 2 6. What are some of the advantages of working with Dudu within a person-centred framework? (20) Task 2: Self-reflection exercise Explain the key concepts of Reality Therapy, as well as its strengths and shortcomings from a multicultural perspective. What is the view of human nature in reality therapy? Think of some areas of your life that you want to change. How might the principles and procedures of reality therapy be useful to you in bringing about these changes? (20) Task 3: Critical evaluation of a Therapeutic Approach Critically evaluate a therapeutic approach of your choice in your prescribed book from the perspective of counselling culturally diverse client populations and what are some of the contributions and the limitations of this approach? (15) Task 4: Create an ethical policy document for your counselling practice Create an ethical framework for your practice that will guide you when dealing with and counselling your clients with regard to personal characteristics of effective counsellors and the competencies needed to be effective multicultural counsellors. ASSIGNMENT 3 2025

UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: 25 SEPTEMBER 2025

,Therapeutic Psychology

Task 1: Case Study – Dudu: Leaving her husband and child

1. Attitude about Dudu wanting to leave her husband and child

From a person-centred perspective, my attitude would be nonjudgmental and
empathetic. I would respect Dudu’s autonomy, understanding that her decision reflects
her internal experiences and needs. Personally, I value family unity and child welfare,
but as a counsellor, my role is to prioritize Dudu’s self-directed growth and well-being
without imposing my values. My values of empathy, respect, and unconditional positive
regard would influence my work by ensuring that Dudu feels heard, accepted, and
supported to explore her feelings safely (Corey, 2020).

2. Advice regarding her plan and her autonomy

If Dudu asked for my advice, I would avoid giving direct instructions. Instead, I would
encourage her to explore her feelings, fears, and possible consequences. I might say:
“Let’s talk about how you feel about your situation and what options feel right for you.”
This helps her clarify her values and make informed choices. Dudu is capable of
functioning without advice because the person-centred approach emphasizes self-
actualization; she has the internal resources to make decisions if supported in an
empathic environment (Rogers, 1961).

3. How I could be most helpful

I could help Dudu by providing:

 Unconditional positive regard: Accepting her without judgment so she can
freely explore her feelings.
 Empathic understanding: Reflecting her emotions to facilitate self-awareness.
 Congruence: Being genuine and transparent in interactions to model authentic
emotional expression.

, This support helps Dudu understand her desires, fears, and responsibilities,
enabling her to make choices aligned with her true self (Corey, 2020).

4. Feelings currently unwilling to accept

Dudu may be unwilling to accept feelings of guilt, shame, or ambivalence about leaving
her child. She might also suppress feelings about her own dissatisfaction, unmet needs,
and resentment towards her husband’s financial limitations or their marital expectations
(Corey, 2020).

5. Person-centred approach and acceptance of feelings

A person-centred approach helps clients accept feelings through:

 Empathic listening: Encourages recognition and exploration of suppressed
emotions.
 Reflection: Mirrors feelings, helping clients identify and accept parts of
themselves previously denied.
 Non-directive support: Allows clients to integrate emotions without fear of
judgment, fostering congruence and self-acceptance (Rogers, 1961).

6. Advantages of working within a person-centred framework

 Provides a safe, nonjudgmental space for self-exploration.
 Supports autonomy and self-directed growth.
 Encourages emotional awareness and self-acceptance.
 Flexible across diverse cultural and social backgrounds, respecting Dudu’s
personal and cultural values (Corey, 2020).
