PSY 211 Project One Template

Use this template to complete your case study analysis. Answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5
sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by
replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.

1. Describe the ways in which Piaget’s research applies to Kelly’s development.
Kelly displays certain tendencies when put in stressful situations. Research presented by Piaget
applies to her impulsivity. The theory of constructivism attributes to Jamie’s emotional
dysregulation and isolation. Based on her interactions with her environment, such as inheriting
dysfunctional qualities from her mother, Kelly has constructed an understanding of the world
around her. Her understanding of the world around her starts within her home. Due to her
experiences, the sensorimotor and preoperational stages of cognitive development have not
flourished. This impediment has prevented proper functionality during the concrete phase.

2. Describe the ways in which Vygotsky’s research applies to Kelly’s development.
Judi believes she may have affected the mental maturation of her daughter, which now allows us
to look at how Vygotsky’s research applies to Kelly’s development. Vygotsky argues that
cognitive development originates from the sociocultural context, occurring during a child’s
exchanges with members within that culture; problem solving skills pass from one generation to
the next, and so on. Neither scaffolding nor the zone of proximal development becomes
established, as Jamie inadvertently learns poor coping mechanisms, observing her mother in the
household.

3. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s physical well-being during the prenatal, birth,
and early childhood stages of development.
Although it is not specified whether she used during pregnancy, Judi has expressed that she has
experienced issues with drug and alcohol abuse. A combination of abusing substances, anxiety,
and depression serve as factors influencing the physical well-being of her daughter. Exposure to
any of these elements could result in many possible outcomes, including brain damage,
premature birth, or stunted prenatal growth.

4. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s cognitive well-being during the prenatal, birth,
and early childhood stages of development.
If Judi consumed alcohol during her pregnancy, this could provide insight into the attention
deficiency in Kelly. The chaotic experiences Judi faced throughout her life may have heightened
anxiety and stress levels in Kelly during her delivery, increasing the possibility of Kelly developing
mood disorders. Additionally, hindrance of emotional regulation or coping skills would have
stemmed from the interactions between Judi and Kelly as there as been a lack of positive
scaffolding.

5. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s psychosocial well-being during the early and
middle childhood stages of development.
Looking at Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development, it is easy to see the factors that come
into play with Kelly’s development. At nine years old Kelly is currently in the industry vs
inferiority stage, and due to the lack of responsiveness to her needs, Kelly grew to a level of
mistrust. With her experience around autonomy versus shame and doubt, she lacked the
