, Section 1: Psychological Assessment in a Real-Life Context
Q1. Chosen Context and Description of the Case
For this portfolio, I selected the developmental assessment context, as it demonstrates
how psychological assessment can be integrated into everyday educational
environments.
The case focused on a six-year-old learner, here referred to as Lebo (pseudonym). His
Grade 1 teacher observed that he experienced significant challenges with foundational
literacy skills, particularly reading and writing, and that he often avoided active
participation in classroom activities. Concerned about his progress, she recommended
that he undergo an evaluation with an educational psychologist.
The assessment was conducted in a child-friendly environment, carefully designed to
reduce anxiety and make young children feel at ease. The psychologist’s goal was to
assess Lebo’s cognitive, language, and socio-emotional functioning in order to establish
whether his learning difficulties were linked to developmental delays, a specific learning
disorder, or emotional factors. The results were intended to guide both the school and
his family in designing appropriate interventions and support mechanisms.
Q2. Sources of Information
To gain a comprehensive understanding of the case, I consulted both academic and
practical sources:
Formal sources:
o Foxcroft, C., & Roodt, G. (2021). Introduction to Psychological
Assessment in the South African Context (5th ed.). Oxford University
Press.
o Peer-reviewed research articles focusing on early childhood development
and psychological assessment, with emphasis on tools such as the Junior
South African Individual Scales (JSAIS) and studies on cognitive
development in young learners.
