7. TMJ and mandibular opening - extent of opening, any
deviations on opening/closing, check TMJ for clicks/crepitus,

8. Other facial features - assess eyes/ears/neck
(changes/scars/swelling)

Local anaesthesia prior to UL6 extraction station -

2. Equipment preparation:
- select correct needle - for infiltration, short needle
- LA cartridge - assess for expiry date, air bubbles, sealed
cartridge
- assembly of needle, syringe, cartridge
3. Topical LA application - gel onto cotton wool roll, indicate

4. Correct positioning of operator and patient
5. Buccal infiltration:
- retract buccal tissue
- insert needle into gingiva at distal aspect of UL6 approx
5mm, down long axis of tooth
- aspirate
- inject slowly approx. 1/2 cartridge and withdraw

6. Palatal infiltration:
- halfway between midline and gingival margin UL6 of LHS
palate = injection site
- aspirate
- deposit solution in appropriate position - look for blanching
of palatal tissues
7. Disposal for equipment - double click needle, remove
syringe, throw cartridge and syringe into sharps bin


Inferior alveolar block anaesthesia station - recommended
approach - Correct Answers ✅1. PPE
2. Choose long needle - yellow
3. Check lidocaine cartridge for batch number and expiry
date, any bubbles, cracks, etc. - explain you would note BN
and EXP in patient notes
4. Set up syringe correctly
5. Topical LA application - explanation of use
6. Place chair in supine position, position head to allow good
visualisation, use light!
7. Locate landmarks
8. Do injection - technique
9. Disposal of equipment - double click syringe, place into
sharps bin with cartridge
10. Explain which tissues are anaesthetised
