1. Introduction
My journey as an aspiring educator has been shaped by my academic experiences,
exposure to diverse learning contexts, and my personal commitment to lifelong learning.
I plan to teach within the South African higher education sector, with a strong interest in
advancing inclusive and transformative education. In a country characterised by
historical inequalities and ongoing socio-economic challenges, I see teaching as a
powerful tool for empowerment and redress. My professional aspiration is not only to
impart knowledge but also to nurture critical thinking, creativity, and agency among my
learners.
I believe that having a personal teaching and learning philosophy is crucial for my
growth as an educator because it anchors my practice in a coherent framework of
values and strategies. It also ensures that I continuously reflect on my role, remain
responsive to learners’ diverse needs, and align my teaching with broader educational
goals of equity, inclusion, and social transformation.
2. Teaching and Learning Philosophy Statement
I believe that the primary goal of education is to develop critical, reflective, and
empowered learners who can actively participate in society. Education should not only
focus on the transmission of knowledge but also encourage learners to question,
innovate, and problem-solve in ways that address real-life challenges. As an educator,
my role is to facilitate meaningful learning experiences that connect theory with practice,
enabling learners to construct knowledge actively rather than receive it passively
(Vygotsky, 1978).
My pedagogical approach is grounded in learner-centred and constructivist principles. I
aim to create an inclusive environment that values diversity and affirms the identities of
all learners. This involves using differentiated teaching strategies, collaborative learning,
