D267 Task 1
Slavery in History and Memory
A1) The first secondary source I choose was Slavery! Slavery! By Kara Walker.
Kara Walker is one of the most respected artists of her generation. She does an
amazing job using black and white cut out silhouettes to tell her stories of that
include pain, life, love, fear and violence on a plantation. She uses her art to
express herself and to address the lives African Americans were forced to live, they
were brutally beat and physically forced to work on their master’s plantation.
Furthermore, Kara Walker shows how gender and the stereotypes of African
Americans slaves and how they were taken advantage of when they were forced to
breed, they were raped and fantasized over sexually during this period. #1
(Walker, 2023)
The second secondary source I choose was Beloved. Beloved is a Pulitzer
prized winning novel by Toni Morrison. In this novel a character named Paul D. In
the Chapter “out of sight” the author details how Paul D had rope around his neck
and iron clasps around his ankles and wrists. This was how slaves were
transported from place to place to ensure they could not escape. Furthermore, the
Author details how slaves were woken up by a gunshot and all slaves were meant
to get up and get to work, no one would leave their cage until the last door was
unlocked. Another shot was heard when it was time to be done with work where
their chains were waiting for them. Slave masters would use these means of
intimidation to scare slaves into doing whatever they wanted. #2 (Morrison, 2004)
A2) The intended audience for Slavery! Slavery! Is everyone and anyone who
appreciates art and who wishes to expand their education on the in American
history. The Art that Kara Walker presents is beautiful but unfortunately the stories
might be a little hard to tolerate given the subject matter may be shocking and
cruel. However, through her Art there is history and education to the truth of what
it was like during the times of slavery.
The intended audience for Beloved is for everyone and anyone who
appreciates a good novel and who wishes to be educated. This story is a tough
read, the details in which Toni Morrison goes through in this novel are heart
breaking. Unfortunately, the details in this book are history and a necessary story
that must be told for everyone to help understand the devastation that slavery has
caused.
A3) One similarity between Slavery! Slavery! and Beloved is that both detail the
harsh reality of slavery and the pain in which the people involved had to go
through and you can’t help but feel the pain of that time through both
