Burns
Random Info (Need to Know)
● 15% of body burned or more = SEVERE BURN
● Will see a lower body temperature with severe burn patients because they
are constantly losing fluids & are open to air (heat gets released)
○ Poikilothermia
● Keep burn victim NPO & in side-lying position to prevent aspiration
● First thing you do is STOP THE BURNING PROCESS
● Chemical burns need to be irrigated immediately
● Cover burn as quickly as possible to minimize bacterial contamination
● Potassium gets released from damaged cells → HYPERKALEMIA
● Rule of Nines: TEST QUESTION
○ Head & Neck = 9%
○ Anterior trunk = 18%
○ Posterior Trunk = 18%
○ Each Arm = 9% → up to elbow = 4.5%
○ Each Leg = 18% → up to knee = 9%
○ Perineum = 1%
● Fluid resuscitation is determined by TBSA burn
● Smoke inhalation injury → Damage to the respiratory system due to
breathing in smoke (carbon monoxide)
○ Carbon monoxide attaches to hemoglobin & prevents oxygen from
entering the cells
○ Give HIGH FLOW 02 on 8-10L
● Zone of Coagulation is the most severe for burn wound repair
● Zone of hyperemia is the least severe
● Tetanus prophylaxis is usually 10 years, but with burn they automatically
are given a tetanus shot (1) → with nail in foot tetanus q5 years
● High protein, high calorie diet
● Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is the leading cause of blindness in children
● Otitis media is the main cause of hearing loss in children
