Advice to Tselani
Tselani is employed as a manager at #23&24 (Pty) Ltd, a company that produces and
markets premium tobacco products, particularly appealing to middle-class youth who
view smoking as a lifestyle. The business remains stable throughout the year but
experiences its highest demand during the final week of December, when consumers
are mostly at home. To safeguard operations during this critical trading period, Phiri,
Tselani’s senior manager, issued a staff roster alongside a directive prohibiting
employees from taking leave. The notice warned that non-compliance would attract
disciplinary action, including possible dismissal.
Simultaneously, Tselani is also an intern pastor at Ko-kerekeng of God (KG), where he
is required to deliver daily sermons in the same period. This leaves him caught between
his professional responsibilities at #23&24 and his religious obligations at KG.
Importantly, he has not yet used his annual leave entitlement. Against this background,
