the territory taken from Mexico to slavery. This passed in the House of Representatives, but
failed in the senate.



election of 1848 - Answer Both major parties tried to ignore the slavery issue. This made the
anti-slavery people angry, and they created the free soil party. Zachary Tyler, a Democratic war
hero with no political experience, won the election.



Free Soil Party - Answer Nominated Martin Van Buren (former pres) as their candidate in the
election. He lost the election to Zachary Tyler, but got 10% of the popular vote, and the Free Soil
Party won some seats in Congress.
