AC1.1 Write Up – Types of Crime
Always Relate to brief
White-collar crime
A white-collar crime is a crime committed for financial gain. These crimes are generally non-
violent and are used in commercial situations. The typical offenders are people of a high
status and are often trusted by the victim, such as businesses and professionals. Also, this
can also apply to crime organisations such as the mafia. The individuals who are targeted
and often fall victim to this type of crime are people who provide funds to financial scheme
and retired individuals. Some examples of white-collar crimes are tax evasion and credit
card fraud. Organised white collar-crimes can also be focused on illegal gambling. A case
study for this would be the case of Jordan Belfort- better known as the Wolf of Wall Street.
Jordan is an American entrepreneur, speaker, author, former financial stockbroker, and
financial criminal. He was responsible of defrauding investors using a ‘pump and dump’
strategy. Jordan lived a lavish life full of parties and used an intense amount of drugs, that
ultimately resulted in addition. In 1999, he pleaded guilty of fraud and other crimes related
to stock market manipulation. Whilst he was sentenced to two years in prison, he only
served 22 months and was let out on a plea. Instead, he had to pay back £100.4 million,
which is approximately half of what he swindled out of people during his fraud scheme.
These crimes are often unreported and have a low level of public awareness due to the
complexity of the crime. They are complex because people often do not realise they are
happening, or they are done in a sneaky underhand way. This crime is criminal but can also
be seen as deviant because swindling people out of the money they should have or should
have earnt. The crime is criminal because it is an act that goes against the laws of the
country. Additionally, there is both mansrea (the intention) and actusreas (doing the action).

Moral Crimes
Moral crimes are crimes that are committed against the belief and values upheld by society.
These crimes are often argued to be victimless while other argue the offenders and the
victims are the same. The offenders are typically in a tricky situation either financially or
physically. Examples of this type of crime is underage drinking, prostitution, vagrancy,
euthanasia, and assisted suicide. In some countries this would also include abortion. The
awareness of these crimes is often low as they are done behind closed doors, or they are
just ignored in sympathy for the victim. The nature of the crime makes it difficult for there
to be specific case studies. This crime is seen as both criminal and deviant however most
people tend to lean towards deviant, especially in cases such as vagrancy as the person
cannot help having to sleep rough. According to the Crime survey for England and Wales for
the year ending March 2023, 34% of people experienced anti-social behaviour, this was a
6% decrease from the year ending March 2020. From the study, 22% of people believe that
anti-social behaviour is a major problem in their local area
