I remember a time when a close friend of mine felt dismissed by a university lecturer. She
had gone to ask for clarity about a complex assignment but was told, rather abruptly, that
she should “read the notes again.” The tone of the response made her feel unimportant and
as if her struggles did not matter. At the time, she walked away feeling embarrassed,
frustrated, and less confident in her academic ability. I felt upset too, because it seemed that
her genuine effort to learn was disregarded.

Her immediate reaction was to withdraw and avoid asking further questions in class. This
